Its combination of knowingness and comic violence suggests a Coen brothers movie shorn of philosophical and formal rigor. The gamy, wised-up wit of its dialogue pays homage to Elmore Leonard, but the plotting is much too sloppy to sustain the comparison. You will no doubt find other things to be reminded of, which is a testament to Mr. This is a dumb movie pretending to be smart, even as it wants you to believe the opposite. Still, dumb can be fun. Anatomy of a Scene | ‘The Nice Guys’
These are wised-up tough guys who fire killer lines as well as their automatics, and action devotee Shane Black absolutely loves for people to be thrown through glass windows the special fake sugar-glass kind used on movie sets that crumble into a shower of crystal pellets as the body sails through, uninjured ; he creates some outrageously contrived and protracted shootouts and one or two good old fashioned action explosions. And what does Gosling do when he comes face to face with it? No, he digs much deeper into the comedy movie bag of tricks and pulls out, of all things, a Lou Costello impression—that wonderful, silent scream the actor would do when he saw something like the Wolfman. Gosling plays Holland March, a pretty pathetic P. March is hired to find a porn star named Misty Mountains, who we know died in a car accident.
